About Us

The Saco River Council is dedicated to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the natural and recreational resources of the Saco River. Our team works tirelessly to ensure the river remains clean, safe, and accessible for future residents and visitors. We champion initiatives to protect the Saco River’s ecosystem, which includes water quality monitoring, shoreline preservation, and promoting responsible land use practices. When it comes to guests, our goal is to educate all river users on safe boating and Leave No Trace principles to reduce human impact on the river.

Our Work

As stewards of the Saco River, we play a vital role in maintaining safe and sustainable access for the public. We collaborate with landowners, municipalities, and state agencies to ensure that recreation along the river is balanced with conservation. Funds collected through river partnerships help us maintain facilities, support cleanup programs, and provide educational outreach to protect the Saco for years to come.

Community Partnerships

Through agreements with state agencies and local organizations, the Saco River Council manages key areas along the river that serve both visitors and residents. These partnerships allow us to provide resources such as visitor education centers, camping and recreation opportunities, and safe launch points for paddlers. By overseeing these areas, we can create positive outdoor experiences while safeguarding the river’s natural beauty.

Plan Your Day on the River

The Saco River hosts a diverse array of activities. Take advantage of convenient and scenic access points to launch your kayak, canoe, or tube while enjoying easy access to parking, restrooms, and picnic spots.

River Access & Day Use Facilities

The Saco River offers numerous public and private access points for day use, which allows visitors safe and convenient entry into the river. Key access points often include boat launches, designated swimming areas, and picnic spots.

Parking for Floaters and Visitors

When planning your visit, be aware that most river access points along the Saco River require a parking and watercraft fee. These fees typically range from $10.00 to $20.00 per car, per day, with larger vehicles or trailers costing $25.00 per day.

Important Saco River Guidelines

A day on the Saco River is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors! By following some simple guidelines, you can ensure that everybody has a safe and enjoyable trip. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and remember that river conditions can change. It’s crucial to be aware of your surroundings, especially when approaching obstacles or hazards like the Swans Falls dam. Be sure to avoid debris and strainers in the water, especially a debris field near Mile Marker 16. To preserve the natural beauty of the river for everyone, practice Leave No Trace principles, which include proper waste disposal, minimizing campfire impacts, and respecting wildlife and other visitors.
